In late 2006 Bachmann released its flat car in 1:20.3 scale. While the Bachmann box car and hopper car are based on scale drawings of an actual car, the flat car is based on Pacific Coast generic car and uses the under frame and trucks from the boxcar.
It appears that several railroads built flats from damaged box cars so in reality the Bachmann approach of building its flat car from the parts of its box car simply followed the prototype practice.
The Bachmann flat is a 30ft model in 1:20.3. It weighs a little over 2 lbs and has a dimension of length 17.8"; width 4.5" wide; and a height about 2".
