Bachmann's
8 wheel Large Scale caboose is a great product from Bachmann
Industries in Large Scale and provides several features which
tttrains hopes will become standards from all manufacturers.
The caboose is a model of the East Broad Top 8 wheel caboose and is massive. It measures 15 1/4" long by 4 3/8" wide, with the top of the copula measuring 7" off the rails. While this is an 1:22.5 model, the windows are large which allows it to fit into either a 1:22.5 or a 1:20.3 layout.
The exterior painting of the model is reasonable and the detail is in keeping with most Large Scale models (barely adequate). We would like to see some additional detail especially on the underside. Also the steps could use a lot of additional work. Metal handrails are perhaps the first additional detail that we intent to add.
One of the nicest features is that it comes with metal wheels! (LGB and Aristo-Craft are you listening?) The problems with plastic wheels is well known and Bachmann needs to be commended for including metal wheels as standard equipment. We think it is time for all Large Scale manufacturers to do the same.
The couplers are standard Bachmann and were immediately replaced with Kadees, (body mount followed later)
The interior is not bad and with some paint and extra details, it could be made most presentable.
One other note. Model #93801 comes painted and unlettered! Another plus for Bachmann as this facilitates custom roadnames.
All in all we give this model a thumbs up! This model is clearly in league with the expectations of serious Large Scale modelers and its price is most competitive.
