Full-metal constructions were used for the first time for the Donnerbüchse. Before that, bodies had always been constructed of wood. The metal construction resulted in a considerably higher noise level which is why the coach came to be called “Donnerbüchse” or “thunderbox”. Development and production began in the 1920s.

"Thunderbox" Donnerbüchse set:

- Comprising a coach 1^st/2^nd class and a coach 2^nd class (red, version with smokestack for use with V 36, technical design like 41110 and 41120)

To use the Donnerbüchse together with the V 36, the coaches had to be equipped with a locomotive-independent heating system (since the V 36 was not designed for the heating of coaches). From the outside, this can be recognised by the smokestack for the coal ovens. Furthermore, these coaches have been painted red.
